Marbella and Puerto Banus
on the Costa del Sol
Marbella is located mid point on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia, Southern Spain. It is approximately 50 kilometres east of the nearest city Malaga which is a major port and commercial centre.
Its unique climate of 320 days of sunshine per year coupled with its average daytime temperatures of 30 degrees centigrade in summer and 18 degrees in the winter has made it into a thriving holiday area all year round. It is often referred to as “the California of Europe”.
Since its humble beginnings as a fishing village it has become an attractive venue for Europe's royalty and the rich and famous in the early fifties when many were invited to the home of Prince Alfonso Van Hohenlohe who had a large villa on the beach near Marbella. He then extended it offering more accommodation and eventually it became the hotel Marbella Club which is today Marbella's most fashionable 5-star hotel.
In the early 1960’s Jose Banus came up with idea of building an exclusive marina close by for luxury boats and constructed a harbour surrounded by apartments, shops and restaurants. This, of course, was named Puerto Banus which is today one of the most famous boating marinas in Europe for the rich and famous with is designer shops, restaurants and night clubs.
The area continued its growth through the 70’s, 80's and 90's and today is like a small city with all the infrastructure second to none offering visitors from all over the world a playground for entertainment and relaxation. This in turn created a demand for the real estate sector to grow with thousands of holiday and second homes being built over this period. Commercial ventures followed with more hotels, shops, offices, restaurants, sports and country clubs and the area now boasts over 60 golf courses with many others being planned.
Marbella is mainly served by the international airport of Malaga which is 30 minutes drive away and there are several flights per day to Gibraltar (45 minutes). Both airports are easily accessible to motorways which run the full length of the Costa del Sol. There are many car hire firms at Malaga airport and a regular fast coach service to and from Marbella.
The pedestrianised promenade area of Marbella is a popular area with its beach clubs and chringuitos (Spanish beach restaurants). Marbella town is more popular with the Spanish tourists from Madrid and the North of Spain.
A good time to visit Marbella is during the fiesta period of the annual feria. Don’t miss out on the local festivities where you can really get the chance to enjoy the flavour of what Marbella is really like. The patron saint of the city is Saint Bernabe and the fair in his honour is celebrated during the first 15 days of June, the highlight day being on June 11, the day which commemorates the Christian victory over the Moors. This feast includes a bull fight, musical performances of known group and singers and of course, all day and all night eating and dancing!
